Laura Daniela Martinenghi

PhD fellow

Ph.D. candidate at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark.

I have a background as a Spanish teacher, but I also have a bachelor's in Molecular Biology and Chemistry and a master's in Biomedicine, and currently working on my Ph.D. research.

Partially my Ph.D. is based on the history of medicine, particularly in the empty antimicrobial pipeline.

I am part of five research groups around Europe. We focus on this topic addressing different angles, in my case, the role of targets in drug development.

EmptyAntimicrobialPipeline

Besides I am part of the Food Safety and Zoonoses Institute at KU , on the Veterinary Public Health research group.

My interest is mainly in antimicrobial resistance, synthesizing compounds, genetics, and the history of medicine.

My Ph.D. consists of three parts:

  • Experimental screening of production of bacteriocins among isolates belonging to Carnobacterium maltaromaticum
  • Synthetizing and experimental screening of antimicrobial compounds.
  • The historical role of target cultures and molecules for antimicrobial R&D in the time period from the 1980s will be examined by archival studies, interviews, and bioinformatics.
