Infection:Pathology, inflammation, circulating biomarkers and PET imaging

PET imaging is used primarily to diagnose the presence of tumors and cancer. We want to use the method to find inflammatory and infectious lesions in the body, and thus to be able to measure the effect of for example antibiotics on lesions in a non-invasive way.

Besides a scanner, PET scanning apply the injection of radioactive traceres designed to specific recognize for example an infectious lesion. In this way the focus of the project is to chemically synthesize infection specific tracers and to validate the effectiveness of different tracers in finding the lesions. Mathematical modelling of the tracer uptake into the lesion will add to the information on effectiveness. We use pig infected with S. Aureus which causes bone infections (osteomyelites) to test the tracers.
