Lactation Physiology

Christopher Harold Knight is Emeritus Professor in Food Animal Biosciences. His research involves a number of EU collaborations concerned with dairy animal wellbeing and productivity. This includes:

  • "Stage 3 Lactogenesis"; the establishment of functional nutritive blood supply to the mammary gland in early lactation
  • Water flux in the mammary gland
  • Manipulation of milk composition with focus on immunoglobulin content
  • Welfare biomarkers in different physiological matrices

In addition the group has a major interest in human lactation and human mastitis.

Chris Knight is Editor of the Journal of Dairy Research and Chairs an EU COST Action in dairy animal health and welfare. More information:
