Express yourself, say what you want: a one day workshop

How to talk about your research - its merits, its flaws and its potential: this is the overall aim of the Workshop. Other aims include learning the language necessary to communicate naturally and fluently and how to tackle talking about the weaknesses of your work.

Although the day is primarily directed towards preparation for the examiners’ questions in the PhD defence, it will be useful for all who need to talk about their research and respond to questions.

We’ll practice the language needed to discuss your research - agreeing and disagreeing; how to respond to different types of questions - good and bad; and what to say to control the situation if you don’t understand or need time to think.

We’ll also explore what questions you would and wouldn’t like to be asked, and why, along with your contribution to the research area.

Work will mainly be in groups with questions and answers and discussions.

Before the Workshop, participants will be asked to prepare a list of questions relating to their research - good, neutral and nightmare questions.
