The main aim of our work is to generate increased understanding of the biology of particular viruses that cause important diseases in animals so that improved methods of disease control can be developed. The focus is mainly on viruses that cause diseases that are not usually present in Europe but represent a major threat if introduced. Our interests include aspects of African swine fever virus, coronaviruses and foot-and-mouth disease virus. New projects on the properties of vector-borne flaviviruses are being started. We focus on developing and using molecular approaches to analyse the replication and properties of these viruses and their effects on the host.
